A DREAM project is set to come true for the Community Service Centre for the Deaf (CSCD), thanks to ‘A Gift of Love’ donation of RM60,000 from the Latin American Ladies Association of Malaysia.
The CSCD is a non-profit and non-government organisation (NGO), whose mission is ensure that hearing-impaired children will acquire the necessary skills to succeed in a life full of challenges.
“This donation will support the creation of a bakery for CSCD that will be managed and operated directly by the students of the community centre,” said Latin American Ladies Association of Malaysia president Yolanda Velasquez, adding that the donation would cover the cost of the cooking equipment needed for the first stage of the project.
Society of Interpreters for the Deaf (SID) honorary treasurer Alvin Wong said the aim of the CSCD Bakery project was to provide training for hearing-impaired youth to prepare them for job opportunities in the future.
The first indication that the dream project might take off came when the La Salle Brothers allowed the centre to use a vacant single-storey house next to the centre free of charge.
Taylor’s School of Culinary Arts also offered to provide basic training to selected hearing-impaired candidates.
Then the Latin American Ladies Association of Malaysia selected CSCD as the main beneficiary of its fund-raising dinner dance, “II Latin American Charity Ball” Romance, that was held at Hilton Kuala Lumpur on Nov 14 last year.
Latin American Ladies Association of Malaysia social service committee Natahalie Nunez Vazquez said the association wanted to support a centre that had an interesting and educational purpose for its children.
The dinner dance, featuring a magical Latino atmosphere, was supported by the Latin American embassies and attracted a good turnout not only from the Latin American community but also lovers of dance and rhythm.
The event, which was supported by sponsors and donors like Sime Darby, Bata, IMPSA, Hilton Kuala Lumpur and Westin Hotel, among others, raised RM84,000.
Rumah Wake 1 in Kuala Lumpur was the other beneficiary of the fundraiser.
